Brit milah

Brit milah (or bris) is the Jewish covenant of circumcision, performed by a trained mohel on the eighth day of a baby boy’s life, symbolizing a religious, historical connection to Abraham. It involves removing the foreskin and naming the baby, ideally among a quorum (minyan). It is a central commandment, distinct from medical circumcision, and occurs on the eighth day even if it falls on Shabbat.
